The Book - 3rd. edition December 2002

The book "Wissensmamangement in der verteilten Projektabwicklung – Grundlagen, Determinanten und Gestaltungskonzepte eines ganzheitlichen Projektwissensmanagements" was handed in in April 2000 as a dissertation thesis at the University of St. Gallen (HSG), Switzerland. The first edition of the corresponding book appeared in October 2000 (publisher: Josef Eul Verlag, Lohmar/Cologne). It was sold out after five months. A second edition followed in April 2001. In December 2002, the third edition went to the book sellers. The work received mostly positive feedback in reviews (see e.g. WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK 44 (2002)4, S.379-391, CoPers 6/2001 or c't 7/2002 quoted below).

c't, one of Germany's best selling computer and technology magazines reviewed the book in the 7/2001 issue very positively: "... Was Ausführlichkeit und Detailreichtum betrifft, findet sich in der Wissensmanagement-Literatur kaum vergleichbares. ... Insgesamt gesehen ist Schindlers Buch sowohl für den Praktiker wie den Forschenden empfehlenswert. Der Grundlagenteil führt auch Neulinge in Wissens- und Projektmanagement ein." [c't, p. 254]

About the Book
More and more organisations choose project work as flexible and reliable structures for the development and production of their goods and services as projects are especially suitable for learning. However, my research with various project teams over the course of three years shows that knowledge and experiences gathered in different projects are not being systematically integrated into the organisational knowledge base. The risk of a knowledge loss at a project’s end is a serious problem for organisations, especially in knowledge-intensive industries, such as pharmaceuticals, financial engineering, or high-tech. Companies could save considerable costs, which result from redundant work and the repetition of mistakes, if they master the project learning cycle. This is being addressed in my book “Wissensmanagement in der verteilten Projektabwicklung”.
The book regards the basics of “Project Knowledge Management”, analyses the determinants which influence an organization´s project work in respect of knowledge management and proposes possible measures.
The topic is addressed by taking an integral knowledge management approach, where the three dimensions Human Resources, Information- and Communication Technology (ICT) and Organization are taken into account interdependently.
